So this October will be one of those months with a Friday the 13th — and Halloween, too. Are we scared yet?
I should break out what horror movies I own for a seasonal replay. I am actually more of a monster fan than what passes for horror films anymore. Give me Dr. Frankenstein or Count Dracula or Godzilla, or the bloodless horror films of the 1940s and ’50s. Once the special effects started getting realistically gruesome, they started to lose me. The suggestion of blood and guts is more terrifying than the reality anyway.
So what shall I slip into the DVD/BluRay player this month? Well, to begin with, Frankenstein and Dracula and Gojira, of course. Was it Son of Frankenstein that I discovered only a few years ago and was very impressed?
The most frightened I remember ever being by a movie was when I was alone in the house and watched It! The Terror from Beyond Space, and I was not surprised a few years later to learn it had influenced Alien, also one of the scariest movies ever.
Oh! Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Invaders from Mars have to be in the mix, and for a change of pace the hilarious comedy Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
’Tis the season!
