“Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?”
Jesus replied, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Matthew 22: 36-40
As I’ve already written, I believe this is the last thing I read out loud to my beloved Red before I realized that her journey had ended.
I can’t think of a better mission statement. Yes, yes, I know, not everyone believes in God, let alone loves God, but can we agree that a love for something bigger than ourselves is a key to a healthier life? And I know people have done awful things professing a love for God, but that’s their fault, not God’s.
And that second commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Recognize your neighbor’s humanity and worth, and recognize that everyone is your neighbor on this big little planet of ours.
Can you imagine how much better our lives could be if we all followed these commandments?
