I wonder who decided to divide the day by hours, and then minutes, and then seconds.
Just a second! Why divide the day into 24 segments, and each of those segments into 60 smaller segments, and then another 60, to get just a second?
Some form of measurement had to be devised (although, come to think of it, why?), but why 24 hours, why 60 minutes? Why 60 seconds per minute and 60 minutes per hour but only 24 hours?
Seven days in a week — I can see the Genesis reference, but then, 12 months? I guess maybe they divided the four seasons into trimesters, but again, why?
The decimal system makes more common sense — with one unit per finger, it’s easier to count with your hands.
I’m not going to find the answers in my head, so I’d best dive into the sea of knowledge and look it up, but in the meantime I’m having fun trying to figure it out.
