All the books, all the memories

My blue journaling chair faces bookshelves, and every so often, searching for a topic, my eyes scan the titles, many of them provoking fond memories — Cyrano de Bergerac — Oh, what a rush that was , rushing through Rostand’s story like a hungry beast, gobbling up the poetry and the poignancy and the love of words, laughing out loud at the scene where Cyrano comes up with 20 better insults than poor Valvert can muster — the depth of his love for Roxanne expressed through the letters he writes for de Neuvillette — and the heartbreaking final scene where Roxanne realizes her true love has been her dear friend all along. To this day my tears well up at the words “My white plume!”

Ah, there’s Dandelion Wine and The Martian Chronicles and I’m falling in love with Ray Bradbury all over again — 100 Selected Poems of E.E. Cummings and oh how words can across the page in unexpected turns dance so! — the biography of Gandhi that opened my mind to nonviolent civil disobedience and love — The Scarlet Letter and the unexpected delight of an English class assignment becoming a page-turner — and again with Wuthering Heights — there’s a line of Harlan Ellison books and oh-so-late-in-life Edgar Rice Burroughs —

What a magnificent symphony words can make in the hands of masters.

The temporary defrost

If seasons were sentient beings, this winter would be a most indecisive creature.

Saturday night I had a near-breakdown waiting for Summer to do her business while an icy wind ripped through me, making the perhaps 10-degree night feel more like 20 below. I collapsed in a heap when I came inside.

Sunday the sun was shining and the temperature was nearly 50. Today’s high is forecast at 20. They’re predicting a major snowstorm for Tuesday. The fact that the first official is a month away is a source of some comfort.

I am hoping against hope that this week’s snowstorm is the last blast of winter and an harbinger of early spring; we always get a last blast storm just before the warm weather takes hold. The all-time worst was the April 13-15 snowstorm of 2018, when 30 inches of snow fell in a couple of days. It would be a blessing for that last blast to come during the last week of February.

It’s not an impossible dream. I remember when a colleague was able to take his sailboat out on the bay on Feb. 29, just to say he once did because the weather cooperated that year. It was 80 degrees on the first day of spring in March 2012. How about a repeat as a 10th anniversary celebration?

We’re not supposed to see 30 degrees again for a couple of weeks, actually, so Sunday’s glimpse of warmer weather was a mirage. Still, a guy can dream …

A selfie with Summer

I took a lot of selfies with Willow. My Facebook profile picture is still a portrait of me and Will, even though she departed this plain of existence 11 months ago.

Summer is seven months old this weekend. As predicted, our new little girl cannot fill the hole in my heart that is the absence of Willow The Best Dog There Was, but she is finding her own corner of my heart and making herself comfortable there.

I decided to do a selfie with Summer the other day. One fact is absolute about puppies: They don’t sit still when you want them to. This is my 19th attempt to take the picture, one of only three that has all of both our faces, and the only one where we are looking in the same direction.

It was such fun!
