The Fable of the Man with the Squirrel on his Head

Once there was a man with a squirrel on his head. He was walking along the sidewalk, minding his own business, when big old Betty Busybody sidled up to him and said, “Pssst! Did you know there’s a squirrel on your head?”

Immediately the squirrel grabbed its own head and said, “No, there’s not!”

“Of course not,” Betty said. “I was talking with this gentleman!”

“He’s no gentleman!” said the squirrel.

“Now, now, let me speak for myself, my little pal,” said the man.

“Yes, indeed,” said Betty.

“By all means,” said the squirrel.

“Thank you,” the man said, and looked Betty in the eye fiercely. “Listen, you big old busybody, what’s on my head is my own flipping business.”

“Why, I never —” Betty began.

“Maybe you should have, once or twice,” snarled the man with the squirrel on his head. And with that, he stalked away, leaving poor Betty behind, standing gobsmacked on the sidewalk.

“I told you,” called the squirrel before they walked out of sight. “He’s no gentleman.”
