I’m writing songs again. Tuesday morning I finished — I think — a song that I started with the words to a first verse in July 2020. I’ve been tinkering with a melody and more words since September, when while writing in my journal I came up with a title or theme: “Tomorrow and Tomorrow.”
For a couple of months I thought it was done, I had a couple of verses and a chorus, but then a middle chord progression occurred to me, and if I had a middle 8 I knew I was going to need a last verse. I thought I had a final line, but then I realized it was the same as the last line of another song I’ve been tinkering with, where the line fits better.
While washing pots and pans Tuesday morning, another last line popped into my mind, and then the lead-up to that line, and it was all I could do to finish at the kitchen sink before dashing back to my guitars. There was the last verse in all its glory, and so I went back to the September journal entry where I first wrote “tomorrow and tomorrow,” and there were the elements I needed for that middle portion.
Back in the day, I would sit my friends or girlfriend down and inflict my latest composition on them. There’s a difference between thinking you’ve got a song and sharing it with someone to find out if it really is. In this day when there’s a digital recorder in every device, I could inflict it on you and the whole world. I just may do that, tomorrow or tomorrow.
