Happy solstice

Winter solstice 3:21 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21

The winter solstice is very wintry this year. About 5 inches of snow Thursday night, and the highs today are expected to be only in the upper teens Fahrenheit. It’s the perfect day for a reminder that, even though the cold is settling in for at least three months, every day from now on will have a tad more light than the day before.

On the shortest day of the year, it’s a sweet thought. In our coldest, darkest hour there is the promise of light. As the saying goes (of course I paraphrase), yes, the cold darkness can kill us, but if it doesn’t, we emerge stronger.
