No better place for these guys

A lot of people I run with have a problem with Joe Biden — or whoever is pulling the strings for poor old Joe these days — commuting the sentences of 37 of the 40 evil people on federal death row.

I hate most everything that Joe — or whoever his puppet masters are — has done to the land of the free and the home of the brave these past few years. But I can’t fault him — or them — for this one.

I hate the death penalty. What right does the government have to take an eye for an eye? I don’t believe a government should be able to defy the law and murder someone, not even an evil murderer. I don’t trust any government to hold the power of life and death. Remember the prophet Tommy James’ words: “Only God has the right to decide who’s to live and die.”

And who says death is the ultimate punishment anyway? You may have heard the expression when someone near and dear has died: “They’re in a better place.” Why should we consign someone who has taken a life, or several lives, to a better place?

The commutations take the death penalty off the table and sentence these 34 dirtbags to life in prison without parole. I like the idea of leaving them in prison, with no freedom and no hope of getting out during their natural lifetimes. That sounds like a just punishment to me.

I feel a little guilty, on this Christmas Eve, wishing a life sentence without parole to 34 unpleasant people who will never know “a better place” while they draw breath. But it’s a fate they brought upon themselves.
