I’ve had an unexpected spurt in readership this week, well over 300 by Friday after a long journey of daily readership closer to a couple of dozen.
What does it mean? Should I acknowledge it? Should I reintroduce myself for the benefit of newcomers, or go on as usual as if filling a small auditorium instead of a large room is a common occurrence?
While I have your attention, perhaps I can share something new I’m rather pleased with, a song I wrote this summer for Mary, who came into my life 19 months after the love of my life died and rather quickly started to ease me out of my grief.
Mary happens to be a trifle older than I, and I’m no spring chicken myself, but we tend to act a few decades younger than our age. We are proof that joy is still possible even after unspeakable loss.
This song came to me after Mary wished we had found each other when we were younger. We had no control over the timing, but I think God made sure we met when we both needed each other most.
So, as long as so many folks are looking this way for the moment, here is a song about love late in life. I hope you like it.
Better Late Than Never
Darling, I wish we had met back when we both were young and free,
When we could run through fields and tumble to the ground in harmony.
I wish our bodies meshed together like they’d just learned how to dance
And we didn’t know what love was, but we were ready to take a chance.
But no, we met in autumn, when our running days are past,
And now you finally have the love you deserve at last.
Better late than never, love, I’m yours and you are mine.
Better to drink deep here and now than to never taste the wine.
Better to ride this train before the end of this ol’ line.
Better late than never, love, I’m yours and you are mine.
Darling, you and I have felt the deepest hurt there is to feel,
And when we came together, we had just begun to heal.
If we’d met way back when, maybe we’d live a fairy tale,
Filled with happily ever afters and a thousand ships to sail.
But no, we met when years and years have taken every toll;
Still, what I have to give is yours from all my soul.
Better late than never, love, I’m yours and you are mine.
Better to drink deep here and now than to never taste the wine.
Better to ride this train before the end of this ol’ line.
Better late than never, love, I’m yours and you are mine.
There’s a place inside each broken heart that cannot be repaired,
The place that can’t forget lost memories once shared.
I will wrap my arms around you and protect you from the cold
And help you tuck the hurt away, if I may be so bold.
Darling, somewhere, those we lost are looking down at us with joy
And grateful someone’s there to comfort his girl and her boy.
The four of us will meet one day, beyond this earthly vale
And raise a toast to ever afters and new ships to sail.
Meanwhile, love, take my hand and we will walk along the shore.
Sunsets are bright and colorful, and we have so many more.
Better late than never, love, I’m yours and you are mine.
Better to drink deep here and now than to never taste the wine.
Better to ride this train before the end of this ol’ line.
Better late than never, love, I’m yours and you are mine.
Better late than never, love, I’m yours and you are mine.
Better to drink deep here and now than to never taste the wine.
Better to ride this train before the end of this ol’ line.
Better late than never, love, I’m yours and you are mine.
Better late than never, love, I’m yours and you are mine.
