I’m still reeling from the T-shirt I found about five years ago with a simple message: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”
I was one of those lucky guys with parents who encouraged me, “You can be anything you want to be.” It’s true of everyone, you know — we are each born with abilities that can lead us anywhere. Too many people are told they can’t, or they convince themselves they can’t, or they become discouraged at the first sign that it won’t be easy.
But most anyone can achieve whatever big audacious goal they set for themselves. Maybe it’ll take 10,000 hours, or more, but you can do it.
We live in a world where we can be anything. What an amazing idea — to choose to be kind.
And the most amazing part is it takes almost no effort at all. You certainly don’t need 10,000 hours to become proficient at kindness.
There’s a lovely old song that goes, “What the world needs now is love, sweet love; it’s the only thing that there’s much too little of.”
Love, and kindness.
What a world it could be.
