Thursday morning I walked into the living room that desperately needed vacuuming and said to the dogs, “I wish that I could — cut through all the dust and dirt and — make the world a better place.” I said it just like that, pauses and all, not knowing what I would be saying until it all came out.
For some reason I liked the sound of it, so I wrote it down. The “dust and dirt” seemed to serve as a metaphor for the ugliness of the day’s non-dialogue on antisocial media.
By sunset I still had nothing to add, and so, looking out at the totality of it all, that is what I have to say:
I wish that I could cut through all the dust and dirt and make the world a better place.
That’s it. That’s all I have to say about that.
I did vacuum the house, though. The dogs seem grateful.
