Is it April yet?

The bitter cold lingers, but the wind chimes have lost their voice, and the people who know about such things say we will see the 20s again starting today. I have often said that I prefer bitter cold to excessive heat — minus 10 feels more bearable than nearly 100, or at least my mind feels sharper confronted with the cold than lethargic heat — but my preference is for neither.

Still, those of us who live with the four seasons bear the extremes, understanding that eventually more temperate weather is coming. That is one of the advantages of living almost exactly between the North Pole and the equator.

I probably would like it a little better if it were April or September more often, but the dead of winter has its lessons and its stories to tell. Best of all, each day brings a little more sunlight from now until the summer solstice.
