Not to worry

The philosopher poet Tom Petty said, “Most things I worry about never happen anyway.” And yet we worry.

We can make all sorts of plans and/or acknowledge our control is limited and turn our cares over to the God of the universe, who’s really in control in any case. But we still worry.

Worry is not a particularly useful emotion. And the easiest way to make someone start worrying is to smile and say, “Don’t worry.”

I took Dejah to see the vet on Monday because she’s old and creaky and has a handful of issues that dogs develop when they get old and creaky. I told the vet that I’ve never had a 12-year-old golden retriever and so her mortality has been on my mind, probably more than it ought to be.

After a thorough review, the vet said she didn’t find anything to suggest that Dejah’s days are numbered, so I can continue making any plans I might have for her 12th birthday party next month. It seems I had nothing to worry about.

I really need to take Mr. Petty’s advice to heart. Most things I worry about never happen, either.
