“I’ll see you Wednesday, Lord willing and the creek don’t rise,” I told my buddy as we parted company.
I hadn’t gone far when God tapped me on the shoulder — in hindsight I kind of appreciate that, because a lot of times God will get my attention by smacking me upside the head or kicking me in the keister.
“You know,” He said confidentially, “it really don’t matter if the creek rises or not.”
You could have knocked me over with a feather, and not because God used less-than-perfect grammar. I just never thought of it that way before. Stuff happens if it’s the Lord’s will, period, no other conditions needed.
I’ll see my buddy Wednesday, Lord willing. If the creek rises or if it doesn’t, I’ll see my buddy if it’s the Lord’s will. If it’s not the Lord’s will, I won’t see my buddy, or if I do, it won’t be to anyone’s benefit. The silly creek doesn’t play a role one way or another.
