Friends we’ve never met

Listen to this post:

Somewhere on the other side of the horizon is a town I’ve never seen, and there is someone there who could have been a friend if we had ever met. We don’t see the world exactly the same, but we share some of the same interests, and that might have been enough to forge a friendship.

Maybe this person agrees with me that The Last Jedi was the best of the last three Star Wars stories, or they’re as convinced as I am that Firefly is the best TV show ever made. We’ll never know precisely, because I’ve never been to that town and we will never meet.

On a planet of 8 billion people, we only ever encounter a fraction of the numbers who are out there. We could fret about lost opportunities somewhere beyond the horizon or take comfort in knowing there are friends we’ve never met — or friends we have yet to meet — wherever we go.
